Chocolate Cream Cheese Buttercream

About the only frosting I love as much as my favorite vanilla frosting... this chocolate frosting with some cream cheese thrown in for some extra richness and a tiny bit of tang! This Chocolate Cream Cheese Buttercream is one of my all-time favorites; I've had plenty of people tell me they ate a piece of cake or a cupcake 'just for that frosting!' 😉

Give it a try and let me know what you think! Recipe below!

Favorite Chocolate Cream Cheese Buttercream Frosting Recipe

(one recipe makes enough for a 3-layer 8-inch cake or generously frosts 24 cupcakes)

8 oz (one package) cream cheese, softened
16 Tablespoons (two sticks) butter, softened
5 ½ -6 cups powdered sugar
1 cup cocoa powder
4-6 Tablespoons milk
1 T vanilla extract
1/4 t. salt (if using unsalted butter)
Beat together softened cream cheese and butter; slowly add in powdered sugar alternating with cocoa powder and milk until frosting reaches desired consistency. Add vanilla and salt if needed and beat until well combined.

If you're having any trouble smoothing this frosting on a cake, I recommend - once you've smoothed it as much as possible - putting the cake in the fridge for 5 minutes at a time and then trying again. The fridge will firm the frosting just enough to make smoothing it easier.

I use an almost identical recipe if I want to make black frosting (photo above) - for black frosting check out my Black Cocoa Cream Cheese buttercream recipe!
